Kenya: Dairy Co-operative Society Development Project
The co-op societies in the Nyandura District were established to help the 2000+ small farmers in the area increase their income by improving farming methods and helping to get their milk to market at a better price. Due to managerial inexperience in communication and in handling the societies' finances, farmers were losing confidence in the co-op and selling their milk in local markets rather than to the co-op. This resulted in lower income for the farmers since the prices are lower in the local markets and was also harmful to the co-op society.

The United Nations Development Program chose Timan to lead a project to help resolve these problems and reduce poverty among dairy farmers by increasing the effectiveness and capacity of eight dairy co-operative societies in this Kenya. We developed a strategy and training course to address the co-op societies' issues. The course we developed focused on teaching managers how to solve their own key business issues such as accounting, finance. sales, marketing negotiation, and communication skills. We then trained our local partner, Africa Microfin Consultants, how to deliver the course. Timan provided on-going monitoring and coaching during the project and provided its final report in October 2006.

Key success metrics for the project (2005-2006) include:
   34% incr.in milk sold
   31% incr. in members
    5% incr. price of milk
   106 managers trained

Kazakhstan: 'Mini MBA' for Governmental and Business leaders
The development of small and medium sized enterprises, (SMEs) especially in the less developed regions of Kazakhstan are a critical component to the the overall economy. Research has shown that the SMEs have significant potential to grow and provide jobs, but are held back due to lack of managerial skills and education. In Kazakhstan, only a small minority can afford and/or have access to advanced managerial training. To help increase the level of managerial education and to assist SMEs grow,

Timan was selected by the Slovak United Nations Development Program to introduce its 'Mini MBA' program to the Kazakh market. This 7-day program is based on the same program Timan developed in Slovakia in the late 1990s and provides managers with practical skills in finance and accounting, strategy, sales and marketing, human resource management, and leadership. At the end of the program, the participants create a business plan that will help them integrate the concepts learned in the course. After a few months, the Mini-MBA Alumni will meet for a 2 day seminar where they will have the opportunity to get individual and small group consultations, hear success stories from their peers, as well as to build their business network with other alumni. (The project was initiated in 2006. Results from the project are expected in 2007.)
